The short answer
Single-product floors force a compromise. Epoxy alone bonds beautifully but isn't UV-stable and can yellow or get brittle. Polyaspartic alone cures fast and resists UV but is thin and unforgiving on an imperfect slab. Acrylic sealers and floor paints are cheap and simply don't last in this climate.
Layering solves it. The epoxy does the bonding, the flake does the hiding and the traction, and the polyaspartic does the protecting.
Why wet climates are harder on garage floors
Three things make Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley tougher on a garage floor than a dry-climate region.
Moisture pushes up through the slab. Concrete sits on damp ground and water vapour moves upward through it continuously. If a coating traps that vapour without the slab being tested and prepped for it, the coating lifts. We cover the mechanics in our guide to concrete moisture and MVT.
Cars bring the weather inside. For months at a time, vehicles drag in standing water, grit and road salt. That mixture sits against the floor and works into any porous surface.
Freeze-thaw at the edges. Near the door, the slab cycles through cold and wet repeatedly through winter, which is exactly where cheap coatings tend to fail first.

Why prep matters more in a wet climate
In a dry region, a mediocre bond can coast for years. Here it can't. Moisture finds every weak point, and a coating that isn't mechanically keyed into the concrete will eventually be pushed off it.
That's why we diamond grind every floor rather than acid etching. Grinding physically opens the pores of the slab so the epoxy penetrates and locks in, instead of forming a skin on top. It's slower, it's messier, and it's the single biggest reason a floor is still intact in year twelve.
It's also why we check the slab before quoting rather than after. A floor that needs moisture mitigation is much cheaper to identify on day one than to fix on month six.
