Most box-store DIY kits are water-based or solvent-based, often only 40% to 50% solids. That percentage tells you how much of the product stays behind after it cures. Pro tip: use rubber mats where the punishment lands

Everyday foot traffic won't hurt a professional coating โ€” walk on it freely. But lay rubber mats under parked car tires, beneath a workbench where heavy tools drop, and across any zone with gym equipment. Mats absorb concentrated stress before it reaches the finish, and swapping a $40 mat every few years beats resurfacing a floor.

The red flags that cut a floor's lifespan in half

Most premature failures aren't mysteries โ€” they trace back to shortcuts taken during installation, and every one is preventable:

  • Skipping mechanical prep. When installers acid-wash instead of diamond grinding to a CSP of 2 or 3, the coating never gets the texture it needs to grip, and it delaminates within months.
