From 1970s Peach Tile to a Metallic Man Cave in White Rock

Location White Rock, BCSystem 4-colour metallic epoxyTopcoat Hi-Wear 90Size 350 sq ftTimeline 3 days

When Brent bought his new home in White Rock, BC, the deal was simple: the house was his wife’s to style, and the basement was his. It came with peach 1970s tile, which didn’t exactly scream “man cave.” Wish Coatings replaced that look with a 350 sq ft, four-colour metallic epoxy floor finished with a Hi-Wear 90 topcoat, in three days.

The short version

Brent’s White Rock basement got a four-colour metallic epoxy floor over freshly self-levelled concrete: a grout coat, an epoxy base coat, hand-worked metallic in Sophisticated Silver, Magnetic Silver, Manatee and Cyan Gold, then a Hi-Wear 90 topcoat. 350 sq ft, done in three days.

Who is the client?

When Brent isn’t leading a fire hall, he’s one of the handiest homeowners we’ve met. He has framed houses in Japan and owned his own plumbing company. He could have tackled plenty of this basement himself, and he still called in the pros for the floor. A metallic floor is hand-worked in wet resin, and the result depends on prep, timing and experience.

The challenge: a 1970s tile basement

The old peach tile set the tone for the whole room, and not in a good way. Before any metallic could go down, the foundation had to be spot on. Another trade self-levelled the floor with concrete for us, giving us a flat, true base. Then our prep began.

Because the basement was already set up as an entertainment space, protection mattered as much as prep. We spent a full day and a half preparing the surface, taping every edge and covering the entertainment system so no dust reached it.

The solution: a 4-colour metallic epoxy system

A metallic epoxy floor gives a basement the depth and movement of polished stone or liquid metal, and it’s a seamless, sealed surface that wipes clean. For Brent we blended silvers and blacks with a hint of gold.

How we installed it

  1. Surface prep and protection. A day and a half of prep on the self-levelled floor, with every edge taped and the entertainment system covered.
  2. Grout coat. Applied a grout coat to seal and smooth the surface before any colour went down.
  3. Epoxy base coat. Rolled a pigmented epoxy base to set the depth of the metallic above it.
  4. Four-colour metallic. Hand-worked Sophisticated Silver, Magnetic Silver, Manatee and Cyan Gold into a one-of-a-kind pattern.
  5. Hi-Wear 90 topcoat. Locked it all in with Hi-Wear 90, loaded with more than 4 lb of crushed glass and aluminum oxide to take years of man-cave abuse.

The result

In three days, a dated tile basement became a high-gloss metallic showpiece that Brent can show off to his firefighter colleagues for years to come. He also noted the thing we care about most: we stuck to the quote. On every Wish job, your quote is your cap.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a metallic epoxy basement floor cost?

Wish Coatings’ metallic epoxy floors start at $16 per square foot. The final price depends on size, slab condition and how detailed the design is. We confirm it at a free in-person estimate, and that written number is your cap.

What has to happen before a metallic floor goes down?

The slab has to be flat, sound and clean. On this job another trade self-levelled the floor first. We then spent a day and a half on prep, taping every edge and covering the entertainment system before the first coat.

How long does a metallic basement floor take?

Brent’s 350 sq ft basement took three days from prep to topcoat. Most residential metallic floors take two to three days, depending on size and prep.

What colours were used in this metallic floor?

Four metallic colours: Sophisticated Silver, Magnetic Silver, Manatee and Cyan Gold. Together they read as silvers and blacks with a hint of gold. Every metallic floor is hand-worked, so no two are identical.

What is a Hi-Wear 90 topcoat?

Hi-Wear 90 is the high-wear topcoat we used to finish this floor. It is loaded with more than 4 pounds of crushed glass and aluminum oxide, so the floor stands up to years of heavy use.

Is a metallic floor covered by the Wish Warranty?

Yes. Metallic floors on concrete carry the 20-year Wish Warranty on colour and adhesion. Your written warranty confirms the terms for your floor.
